koh lanta

Koh Lanta, a district in Krabi Province, nestled in the Andaman Sea, encompasses an archipelago of approximately 52 islands, spanning across 131 square miles. These islands are predominantly undeveloped or serve as protected marine areas within the national park.

When people mention “Koh Lanta,” they typically refer to the largest and most inhabited island, Koh Lanta Yai, which stretches 18 miles in length. The primary focus of tourism is along the west coast, facing Koh Phi Phi island.

Arriving at Ban Saladan, the largest town located on the northern tip of the island, visitors can easily access various beaches. As you venture south along the coast, the island gradually becomes more tranquil, offering a quieter atmosphere.

When to visit Koh lanta

The best time to visit Koh Lanta is during the dry season from November to April, when the weather is pleasant and rainfall is minimal. The peak tourist season is from December to February, while the shoulder seasons of November and April offer a quieter experience. The rainy season lasts from May to October. I visited Koh Lanta in November 2022, and it still rained quite a lot.

The regular boat service between Krabi and Koh Lanta stops running around the end of April each year. As a result, many businesses on the island begin to close in late May and stay closed until November when the season starts again.

Visiting Koh Lanta during the low season from June to November is still possible, but there are fewer options available. It’s not just about the rain during this time; the west side of the island can experience strong storms that damage the beaches and even destroy bamboo huts.

how to get to koh lanta

The most common way to reach Koh Lanta is by minivan. The minivans to Koh Lanta run on a daily basis all year round. During the high season from November to April, there are daily boat connections available between Krabi Island and the mainland. Additionally, there are daily ferry services operating between Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, and Ao Nang.

Visitors can explore a handful of shops, galleries, and restaurants, making it a pleasant way to spend an afternoon away from the sun.

Moreover, Lanta Old Town serves as the cultural base for the Chao Ley, also known as “sea gypsies.” These seafaring people were the original settlers on the island over 500 years ago, and their origins remain largely unknown due to the absence of a written language. Today, the Chao Ley primarily work as fishermen and reside in stilted houses along the coast. They have their own language, customs, and religious ceremonies, adding to the unique charm of the area.
