The tropical paradise of Thailand’s Koh Yao Noi island

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is kyn-birds-edited.jpg

Ko Yao Noi, the sister island of Ko Yao Yai, is a tropical paradise situated in the Andaman sea between Phuket and Krabi. At 12km long and 4km wide, Koh Yao Noi is only about half the size of Ko Yao Yai. However, it offers more developed accommodation and infrastructure to tourists in comparison to Koh Yao Yai.

Koh Yao Noi is predominantly inhabited by Chao Lay, commonly referred to as Sea Gypsies, who are followers of Islam. The island’s economy thrives on fishing, sea farming, and rice paddies. Koh Yao Noi offers some luxurious accommodation along with options for budget backpackers.

When you arrive on Koh Yao Noi

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is kyn-arrive-edited.jpg

When you arrive on Koh Yao Noi you can rent a scooter or take a songathew to your final destination on Koh Yao Noi. Friendly locals may also be available to offer assistance and provide information about the island’s attractions and activities.

How to get around Koh Yao Noi

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is scooter-gas-edited.jpg

The easiest way to go from A to B, as like most Thai islands, is by renting a scooter. Scooter rental on Koh Yao Noi costs approximately 200 THB for 24 hours and gas is super cheap at around 40 THB per litre. Road conditions are generally okay, however, expect occasional potholes and sandy slopes. Since the island is sparsely populated island with almost zero traffic, even inexperienced riders are pretty safe. It is an amazing experience to cruise along the perimeter of the island with amazing views of Phang Nga Bay

I witnessed a lot of tourists cycling around on bicycles, while on Koh Yao Noi. While this is fine for short distances, it is a limited mode of transport, as you can not explore the whole island this way, unless you are a very experienced cyclist, as the heat would make for an absolutely exhausting venture. If you prefer to stay in one area and not explore the whole island, then a bicycle would be perfect to get you from the beach- to a restaurant -to your accommodation.

Songathews are available on the island, but mainly they just bring you from Point A to Point B. If you are not looking to explore the whole island, then this option is fine as you can get a songathew from the port when you arrive, explore your surroundings on foot or bicycle, and then you can order a songathew through your accommodation to bring you back to the port, when you are leaving.

Beaches

Welcome to the amazing east coast of Koh Yao Noi! This is where you’ll find the main beaches: Pasai Beach and Klong Jark Beach. They’re both in the southern part of the island, where most of the things tourists like are located. These beaches are right next to each other and easy to reach from the main street. You can park your scooter there and find your favorite spot. Sometimes, depending on the water, the best spots might change. And guess what? You’ll also find lots of yummy restaurants and cool cafés on these beaches. So, get ready for a fun beach adventure on Koh Yao Noi!

I’m going to mention some lesser talked about beaches that I think are worth a visit!

Pasai Beach

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is pasai-beach-3.jpg
Swimming at Pasai Beach at high tide

One of Koh Yao Noi’s main beaches, Pasai Beach is a quiet strip of sand about 2 kilometers long, on the East coast of Koh Yao Noi, with the near-deserted tarmac road running directly parallel with it. It has soft sand, clear blue water, and amazing views. You can relax on one of the many hammocks scattered along the beach, swim in the clear water, and enjoy the natural surroundings. If you like, you can also go snorkeling or kayaking or paddle boarding.

Enjoy the beach at different times to experience both high and low tides, each offering its own unique charm and opportunities for exploration. Between 9am-3pm the tide is in and you can swim in the clear waters. After this the tide is out and the beach becomes very muddy and rocky and swimming is not possible.

Six Sense Beach

This beach is a hidden gem on Koh Yao Noi. It is somewhat of a secret beach. You have to off the islands main road and go up a dirt road before turning right onto another dirt road, to reach the beach. We took our scooters up to it, and it was a very difficult task as the dirt road was wet from rain the previous day and our scooters got stuck several times. However, once you reach this beach it feels like you are on your very own island. The road to reach the beach is pictured below.

Thakao Beach

Don’t miss the incredible Thakao Beach on Koh Yao Noi! When the tide is low, you can walk to a small island called Koh Nui right in front of the beach. It’s such a cool experience! Plus, from Thakao Beach, you’ll be treated to a stunning view of karst rocks in the distance. It’s a picture-perfect sight that will leave you in awe.

Khlong Jark Beach

At Khlong Jark Beach, you’ll find soft sand and gentle waves that are perfect for swimming. The beach is surrounded by lush green trees, creating a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. There are also little crabs and shells to discover along the shore. Plus, you’ll find yummy food nearby, so you won’t go hungry.

2. Island Yoga

Experience the serenity of Island Yoga on Koh Yao Noi, an enchanting island in Thailand’s Andaman Sea. This was one of the best experiences I had while on Koh Yao Noi. You can stay at the yoga retreat and experience all the different activities or, if you are not a guest at the retreat, you can attend the drop in classes each day at 10am for 400 THB.

3. Ride your scooter around the island

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is scooter-riding-kyn-edited.jpg

You can drive around the whole island in about 30 minutes. Renting a scooter allows you to do this and stop off to see some sights along the way. Rent a scooter and embark on your adventure. Feel the wind in your hair as you navigate the winding roads, passing through lush greenery and quaint villages. Discover hidden beaches, picturesque viewpoints, and local attractions at your own pace. Remember to wear a helmet, follow traffic rules, and respect the local culture.
